A Word Of Explanation

DIRECTORY OF HEBREW NAMES AND DATES lists Hebrew and Yiddish names, their transliterations, equivalents, popular adaptations; and Hebrew dates with their Common Era equivalents. In addition to school lists, the following books served as sources: H. E. Goldin, HAMADRIKW Hebrew Publishing Company. Alfred A. Kolatch, THESE ARE THE NAMES. Jonathan-David Co. M. Glen, A STUDY ON AMERICAN NAMES, Hadoar, Jan. 1953.

Transliterations follow Ashkenazic pronunciation except for female names that have acquired "ah" endings by popular usage.

The code given to the Hebrew is a code established in tradition and carried over through Spacerite and SKS  lettering charts. However, with the advent of computers the code should be by alphabet; alas! no standard has been established for any (English, etc) keyboards.  Until such a standard is reached we shall post the traditional code.   A Code chart is found on page 28.

Equivalents are derived from Greek, Latin, French, Spanish and English sources. Direct equivalents of Hebrew names are given first; others follow in alphabetical order. The direct equivalent is omitted if it is identical with the transliteration.

Adaptations occur not only in relation to the name under which they are listed but are adapted by popular usage from any names with similar sound or initial.

Yiddish names or Hebrew names that have acquired Yiddish style usage are marked by an asterisk. Since
Yiddish names vary in spelling, depending on colloquial usage, there may be forms which are not listed.
Not all English forms of names are listed since English Spelling is determined by personal preference.

The Index contains a cross reference of English names to their Hebrew or Yiddish equivalents. Hebrew equivalent are given for Yiddish names derived or translated from Hebrew. English equivalents are found by referring to the original Hebrew name.

Some names are similar in meaning and therefore have the same equivalents. If a name in the Index bears more than one reference, it may be assumed that they are related in meaning. Adaptations are not related to the meaning of the name.

Mydrawingboard.com has structured this online directory exactly like the original Directory. For example: Page9.htm corresponds with Page 9 of the directory, etc.

A Search engine can be found on our Table Of Contents page.
